I’m very excited today to present a guest post from my BFF—my bestie, if you will—Elisabeth. I won’t say much by way of introduction since I’ve already written a rather gushy post about her, which you can read here if you want to know her better (or if you need a good cry). What is not commonly known is that Elisabeth is an excellent writer. I loved this when I read it—I think you’ll find it as penetrating as I did.

“Seen”

She gave this name to the Lord who spoke to her: “You are the God who sees me,” for she said, “I have now seen the One who sees me.” (Genesis 16:13)

Just as you found Hagar, you find me.  You call me by name, you hear me, and you see me.  I am not invisible to you.

Because you see me,  I never have to be alone.

Because you see me, I know you can be trusted.

Even if  I am seen by no one for the rest of my life, You see me.

You see my heart, my desires, my disappointments, my anxieties, my fears, my gifts, my potential, my worth and even my sin.  You see me for who I really am and for who I can be.  You see me unmasked, naked, and stripped of the world’s judgment.

The reality of your vision terrifies me and comforts me, leads me to repentance and to praise, brings me to my knees and to my feet.

I want so many to see me that I forget whose gaze truly matters.  So, you lead me, just as you did Hagar, to the desert alone. It is there I feel the gaze of El Roi, the One Who Sees Me.
