An Aside

It has come to my attention that my introductory post may have led readers to expect more about cereal than I have so far delivered. This is easily remedied, since I am more than happy to blog about the source of so much happiness. I love cereal.

I love it a lot, actually. Probably more than any person should. I eat a bowl almost every night before bed, and it’s obviously standard breakfast fare … which means it’s not uncommon for me to have cereal twice in one day. This has been going on since I was little, which I guess adds up to about a jillion bowls of cereal over the course of 25 years.

Different kinds of cereal are even tied to stages in my life. For example, in its earliest days, my friendship with Sarah Delotelle was built almost entirely on our common love for Frosted Mini Wheats (sweet and wheat forever). In my mind, Mini Wheats = freshman year of high school. When I was six I couldn’t get enough Trix, which is to be expected. These days I prefer a slightly lower sugar content. My current favorite “adult” cereals are Kashi Cinnamon Harvest and Cascadian Farm Multi-grain Squares. (Did I mention that I’m a hippy and these are best accompanied by organic milk?)

Cereal even played a part in my coming of age. One day I was grocery shopping — I think it was junior year of college. As I stood in Walmart’s cereal aisle, I faced a crisis. Would I buy the box Fruity Pebbles that was taunting me from its place on the shelf? Suddenly, it hit me. My mom wasn’t there. I didn’t have to buy Kix. I could eat whatever I wanted, even if sugary, falsely-colored cereals were banned from the Hill house. I bought the Fruity Pebbles, and I’ve never looked back. (I love you, Mom, but you’re not the boss of me.)

Needless to say, I am rather passionate about my cereal. I will stop before this turns into rambling, but if you want part two, you only need ask.

What are your favorite cereals? How have they changed your life?

My memories with Erin Hill accompany morning toast, coffee and late night organic yogurt with berries! :) Does that count in the same category as cereal?

    Erin,
I guess it’s ok that you buy sugared cereals without my permission, but know this -it’s much more satisfying to eat Lucky Charms in the living room after your small daughter is in bed at night. Oh yeah, and let the pony drink the milk.

Don’t worry about me. I’m just crying.
