Ash Wednesday

Dust you are, and to dust you shall return.

Today is Ash Wednesday. Mortality, finitude, helplessness, brokenness, sin.

Confronting these deep and inalterable realities is nearly unbearable. I am dust, and the sum of all my toil amounts to specks of ash in the wind.  My ideas, my words, the things I have built—all ash. And today I bear the mark of a community made of dust, a people called to know the impotence of their efforts.

Praise be to God, who trades beauty for ashes, and breathes life into dust.
